Hongdae Guesthouses: Dressed in Korean tradition

Of all the foreign tourists who visited Seoul in 2013, 54 percent visited Mapo-gu, which is where Hongdae University Station is located.

With the increased tourist flow, many guesthouses have begun cropping up in the Hongdae University Station area. This area is popular for its proximity and easy accessibility from the airport via the airport express train. Due to their low prices, guesthouses are becoming increasingly popular with foreigners, who are revisiting them on subsequent trips to Korea.

Hongdae B Guesthouse
- Traditional Korean beauty and the comfort of hanji and ondol

The most prominent feature of B Guesthouse is the comfort it provides, akin to that of a traditional Korean home. This atmosphere of comfort is created through the use of hanji (traditional Korean rice paper) on the walls and its ondol (traditional Korean floor heating system) in the floor.

One thin sheet of changhoji (thin piece of hanji pasted onto wooden door frames) insulates well enough to protect the room from the coldest winds in the middle of winter. It also has an outstanding air purifying effect that keeps rooms feeling more fresh and pleasant than rooms with ordinary wallpaper. Hanji has outstanding temperature and moisture control properties and helps relieve atopic dermatitis and rhinitis.

Although the building was built in the traditional style, the guesthouse is equipped with modern amenities. Services include clean bedding, a hearty breakfast, shared Internet access, free Wi-Fi, personal lockers, and keypad door locks.

Also, in consideration of its female guests (70-80% of all guests are female), there is a “powder room” complete with a cosmetics table.
The cost for a room is KRW 25,000 on weekends and 20,000 on weekdays (dormitory-style room).

Dream Guesthouse
- The harmony of hotel comforts and the beauty of open space

Located along a main road, Dream Guesthouse is highly visible. The guesthouse occupies the entire building, with a cafe, restaurant, and convenience store on the first floor.

From the outside, Dream Guesthouse seems as if it would provide elegant accommodations with a modern interior. However, upon stepping inside, one can see hardwood furniture, traditional patterns, and a wooden ceiling all illuminated with a yellow light that seeps through the layers of wood – all of which together create a uniquely Korean atmosphere.

There are three types of room to choose from. All rooms have a window with a traditional latticed frame and a wall painting by a famous Korean artist, which help the guest feel a sense of traditional Korea.

Contrary to the modern comforts of its Single Room and Twin Room, the Family Room is designed in the style of a traditional Korean sitting room. With an ondol floor, the Family Room is furnished with antique furniture, blankets wrapped in traditional multi-colored fabric, and an elegant seated table made from zelkova wood.

The Dream Guesthouse is perfect for visiting families who wish to experience traditional Korea. It is also sought out by solo travellers and foreigners staying in Korea on business who want an alternative to a hotel.

Facilities include a cafe that serves toast and coffee, free Wi-Fi services, and a card door lock system for all guest rooms.
Another special feature of Dream Guesthouse is the rooftop garden, which is open free of charge to all guests.

The cost for a room is KRW 69,000 on weekdays (single room) and KRW 79,000 on weekends.
