Hongdae free market is a representative art market on the Hongdae street which is held in the Hongdae Children’s Park (a playground in front of Hongik University) at 13;00 – 18:00 every Saturday from March to November.

The free market is a naturally created art market and festival where various creators meet with citizens through their creations to communicate and exchange with them. Items on the free market such as a hand-made bag, t-shirt with hand-drawn pictures, rings and purses are handcrafted products by about 100 young artists teams called a living artist . Since its opening in March 2002, the market has been increasing its popularity and become a major attraction around the university. In particular, the market is widely-known to foreigners due to free atmosphere from plentiful stores and visitors filled in the narrow market space of the park. 
During a free market period, “afternoon stage”, a free market performance is provided and artists with talents in dance, music and performance communicate with citizens on the open space.
