The
Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is one of the most prized destinations for foreigners
visiting Korea. DMZ’s reputation has risen as a unique buffer zone representing
the world’s last remaining Cold War confrontation between South and North Korea
among foreigners.
As a no man’s
land, it remains a hidden treasury of wildlife and greenery, simmering
anticipation as an ecological repository after the national unification.
Despite being
an off-limit area to civilians, a sightseeing train focusing on the theme of
DMZ, which stretches two kilometers from the Military Demarcation Line (MDL),
has started running from downtown Seoul since May 4.
It is in the limelight for providing
passengers with a rubbernecking view of its pristine environment, allowing them
a firsthand experience of divided Koreas.
The DMZ Train
departs from Seoul Station, also home to the Airport Railroad Train. Passengers
can easily transfer to the train from the Airport Railroad Train, which
connects Seoul Station, Incheon International Airport and Gimpo International
Airport.
The DMZ Train
itself is an attraction. The exterior of the First Train has recreated the
effect of a rusted and bombarded caravan from the Korean War. A banner reading,
“The iron horse wants to run,” symbolizes the national yearning for
reunification. Phrases denoting peace, love and unity in different languages,
which are painted on the interior of the train, capture the attention of
passengers. Paintings of people holding hands together -- from the East and
West, adults and children alike -- also decorate the inside of the Second and
Third Train based on the theme of peace, love and unity.
The DMZ Train
which starts off from Seoul Station arrives at Dorasan Station after passing
through Neunggok, Munsan, Uncheon and Imjin-gang Station. There are different
seating arrangements available such as looking out of the window and toward
front row passengers.
