[Outing in the City] Dongmyo Flea Market and Cheonggyecheon Stream

Nowadays, the weather is getting hotter in Seoul. Don't you want to go for an outing in the city that can revitalize your boring daily life?

#1 Dongmyo Flea Market

To get to Dongmyo Flea Market, take Seoul Subway to Dongmyo Station, get off at Exit 3, and just follow the crowd. Dongmyo Flea Market is also known as "Dongmyo second-hand market" which is consisted of approx. 6,000 stalls in front of Dongmyo Shrine in Seoul.






Dongmyo is famous for vintage clothing and miscellaneous fashion items. However, you can also find other food and items such as fruits, vegetables and antiques items are being sold at low price here. If you're interested in collecting old music CDs or antique items, check out Dongmyo Flea Market. You may find treasure among the many items here.



There are many second-hand fashion items in Dongmyo Flea Market. You can buy a variety of fashion items such as clothes, shoes, sunglasses and bags.




First of all, you can find clothes in cheap price ranging from  KRW 2,000 to KRW 5,000. It may takes a lot of time and effort to find your favourite item in the pile of clothes and accessories. However, it is economical is you managed to find good items in cheap price.




Clothes that are hanging here start from KRW 5,000. It's a little more expensive than the previous pile of clothes, but it's nicely organized, so it is easy to find good items that you may like.




Last but not least, there is a vintage clothing shop. Vintage-style clothing or second-hand branded items are often sold here at the price ranging from KRW 10,000 to KRW 20,000. The prices are similar to regular clothing shops.



People normally leave the market with their hands full of bags. After looking around the market, let's go to Cheonggyecheon Stream!

1. Getting here : At AREX Gongdeok Station, transfer to Subway Line 6  ▶ Get off at Dongmyo Station Exit 3, walk 1 min

3. Opening hours : 10:00 ~ sunset (Depends on the stall)



#2 Cheonggyecheon Stream



Walk through Dongmyo Market and you will see the bridge like the picture above.
You have arrived at Cheonggyecheon Stream! Cheonggyecheon Stream flows through the boundary between Jongno-gu and Jung-gu, the heart of Seoul.

Cheonggyecheon Stream was restored with about 22 bridges, together with green trees, grasses and walking paths well organized, making it a nice place to take a walk or do exercise. This is probably the reason why many people come here for jogging or to ride bicycles in the evening.




There are also many big fish in the stream. It's also fun to see the fishes swimming while you take a walk.



If you take a slow walk along Cheonggyecheon Stream, you will be able to enjoy some relaxing moment. You can also sit on the stone in the shade under the bridge and relax while watching the water flowing quietly.



If you wish to take a short rest during your trip in Seoul, do consider to include Dongmyo Flea Market and Cheonggyecheon Stream in your itinerary.

Introducing a festival
to warm your hearts with beautiful memories,
the 2019 Seoul Lantern Festival!

Let’s learn more about this festival.



What is the Seoul Lantern Festival?
 


The Seoul Lantern Festival is a major cultural celebration held by the city of Seoul every November where a different concept brightens the entire Cheonggye Plaza and Cheonggyecheon with a brilliant display of colors, attracting more than 2.5 million visitors each year.
Come see the 72 sets of over 310 large-scale lanterns along the Cheonggyecheon path that are sure to take you back to your childhood and inspire you. :)

The 11th festival held this year has transformed into a sensory festival where people from all over the world and all generations can have a shared experience and connect with more than ever.

The theme this time is “Illuminating Seoul’s Night through Fairytales” where 
Korea’s fairytales and world-famous fairytales will be displayed, as well as unique artworks combined with “media art.”

There are four themes, starting from Cheonggye Plaza and ending at Supyogyo, where you can see a variety of works from such as “The Little Prince,” “The Fairy and the Woodcutter, Cinderella,” and “The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl”
and take photos of a lifetime with people precious to you to keep as keepsakes.


“Find the hidden lanterns” everywhere
 


One of the charms of the Seoul Lantern Festival is searching for hidden lanterns while taking a walk and breathing in the autumn air after eating dinner.

You will see lanterns made of various materials hidden around the bridges, walls and trees of Cheonggyecheon.

Visitors here to enjoy the festival will have fun finding cats, butterflies and pigeons they see daily in the form of lanterns as they take a stroll.


Various events to experience and “Wish Lantern”
   


The festival’s signature event is “Float a Wish Lantern,” in which beautiful memories are made by writing down wishes on paper boats illuminated with various colors and floated down the Gwanggyo.

There are also other various events such as the paper lantern making event where you can make paper lanterns including fairytale lanterns, Seoul lanterns, and lanterns in the shape of a fortune pouch, and you can purchase a souvenir LED Lantern Festival ballpoint pen.


A helpful tip to get to the Seoul Lantern Festival

From Seoul Station, take off from “0” and go
 “1” stop to City Hall Station. Get off and leave through exit “4” and walk about “9” minutes and you will see the Seoul Lantern Festival.
