First Aid Technique (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - CPR)

An emergency has occurred!

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) is a very important first aid

that helps pump the heart to get blood circulating

and deliver oxygen to the brain of a person who is in cardiac arrest.

First Aid Technique

(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - CPR)

[Bystander CPR (How to perform CPR)]

1. Check for response

Check the safety of the site first and approach to the victim.
Tap on his/her shoulder and ask loudly, “Are you alright?”
If there is no reaction, it should be considered as a sign of cardiac arrest.

2. Call 119

If the patient does not respond,
ask for help loudly to people nearby to call 119.
(If there is no one, you should make the call by yourself.)
If Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is placed nearby,
bring the device at the scene and use it immediately.

3. Check for breathing

Observe the patient’s face and chest less than 10 seconds to check
whether he/she is breathing.
If the patient does not breathe or it is abnormal,
it is considered to have cardiac arrest.

※ It is desirable to be aided by first responder through the phone
as it is difficult for ordinary people to determine abnormal breathing precisely.

4. Press down the chest by 30 times
(CPR with chest compression)

If you do not know how to perform artificial respiration or
do not want conduct the act, continue with chest compression only.

5. Perform artificial respiration by 2 times

(1) Turn over the patient’s head and lift his/her chin to open airways.

(2) Block the patient’s nose with thumb and
index fingers of your hand used to turn over his/her head and,
open your mouth widely to completely close the patient’s mouth
and breathe out for a second till the his/her chest ascends.

(3) Check whether the patient’s chest ascends
when breathing in.
After breathing in, release both mouth and nose of the patient
for exhalation.

6. Repeat chest compression
and artificial respiration

Repeat 30 chest compressions and 2 rounds of artificial respiration
until the rescue team arrives at the scene."

7. Recovery position

If the patient makes some noise or moves during chest compression,
please check whether he/she recovers his/her breathing.
If that is the case,
lay the patient down sideways to prevent from blocking airways.
