Staying at home has become the new normal due to COVID-19. Let's get out of the house and go on a day trip to Ganghwa Island by taking the Airport Railroad. In this post, we will introduce Jeondeungsa Temple to you.
There are two main paths to get to Jeondeungsa Temple - east gate and south gate. We took the south gate that passes through the Samrang Fortress. After paying the entrance fee, as we walk up, we saw the old pine trees that make this forest path so beautiful.
It would be nice to be able to take off the face mask and breathe in the fresh air in the forest.
How long did it take for us to get there? We have arrived at the Samrang Fortress, which is also called Jeongjok Mountain Fortress. It is unclear when the fortress was built, but it was recorded in the history that Dangun, the founder of Gojoseon, built the fortress for his 3 sons. Thus, it proves that this place has a long history. In the fortress, there is Jeondeungsa Temple, an old temple in Korea that was founded during the Three Kingdoms Period.
As you enter Samrang Fortress, you will see the stone tower that other people have made wishes upon the stones. You can also pick up a stone on the road, make a wish and put it on top of this.
The path going uphill is quite steep. You may be out of breath, but you will forget about it as you walk in this cooling forest. Jeondeungsa Temple in Ganghwa Island is a good place to visit at anytime because it offers different beautiful scenery in various seasons. In Spring, it gives you the spring energy of a new life, and the dense green forest gives you a refreshing feeling in the Summer. In autumn, the red autumn leaves create a magnificent view, and in winter, the white snow that fall on the surface create a quiet atmosphere of the temple.
You can follow the information board to walk to Jeondeungsa Temple. Wow! This is how old temple in Korea looks like! You can see the sight of the Temple in between the trees.
Walk slowly and feel the cool breeze. Many people said that visiting a temple, regardless the religion, makes them feel calm. They also think of relaxation and healing when someone talks about temple.
At Jeondeungsa Temple, there are Daeungjeon Hall (Treasure No. 178) and Yaksajeon Hall (Treasure No. 179). It is like treasure inside treasure at this place. If you just take a slow walk around the temple, you will feel peaceful and calm. This is a trip to search for cooling and refreshing moments.
The zelkova tree in front of Daeungjeon Hall's courtyard is said to be a shelter for those who visit Jeondeungsa Temple. This is a protected tree that is more than 400 years. It harmonizes with large trees at the surrounding, adding to the beautiful nature view at this place.
It is also fun to take pictures around Jeondeungsa Temple. We discovered cute smiling monk at unexpected place.
There is a shelter built for visitors that visit Jeondeungsa Temple. It is such a colorful bench placed at the temple. ^^ You will also see big jars that keep various sauce here.
Why not visit Jeondeungsa Temple in Ganghwa Island in your next Korea trip?
