[Walking Course in Seoul] Maebongsan Forest Walking Trail

Maebongsan (매봉산), located in Mapo-gu, got its name because shape of the mountain looks like a hawk ("mae" in Korean). The mountain is not too tall so anyone can hike up the mountain easily. Since it is located in the city, you can easily go there for a walk especially when you can't travel far. Maebongsan forest walking trail consists of 7 walking courses, between Bongsan to Eungbongsan. This is recommended for anyone who would like to go for a long walk.




Maebongsan forest walking trail is surrounding World Cup Stadium and the back gate of the Oil Tank Culture Park. There are sign boards to guide you around so you do not need to worry about getting lost.



Although it is located in the city, it is very well preserved. Therefore, you are able to meet different kinds of plants and animals.




From Maebongsan entrance to the peak, it is about 660m and you should be able to hike up without much difficulties. There are wild boar living in Maebongsan. In the event of seeing a wild boar during your hike, please do not stimulate or disturb it. Try to let it pass by and avoid it.

It is also important to avoid hiking during late evening or early dawn.



Maebongsan is mostly visited by the people who lives in the neighborhood near to this mountain. It is less crowded so you can enjoy a quiet walk here.

There are many beautiful flowers as you find your way to the peak.





In addition, Maebongsan is known as the representative healing forest in Mapo-gu. Although it is a mountain located in the city, it is full of old trees that formed the forest.

If you take a walk in Maebongsan, you will be able to enjoy the clean air, which will make you feel healthy.




Maebongsan has a walking trail now where everyone can visit. Actually, up to 2 years ago, it was closed with iron fence.

To prevent the rocks from falling and landslides, the site went through changes such as repaired and reinforced the slope to enhance safety, built new walking paths and planted trees to create a new look just like what you see right now.


As you hike up to the peak, you will find that the mountain is covered with dense bushes everywhere.




If you take a walk at Maebongsan on a clear and sunny day, you will be able to enjoy the view of the pretty sky and trees. There are a lot of pine trees here and you can feel the charm of its uniqueness.




Since Maebongsan walking trail is surrounding World Cup Stadium and the Oil Tank Culture Park, when you get to the mountain peak, you can see the view of World Cup Stadium and Oil Tank Culture Park. If the weather condition is good, you can even see Mapo Bridge from here.

There are about 36,000 trees (such as royal azalea, white azaleas, forsythia, round pine trees and others) are planted along the Maebongsan forest walking trail. Many people come to Maebongsan for hiking while enjoying the flowers, especially in Spring or Autumn.



If you take a slow walk, it will take approximately 30-40 mins to complete the walking trail, which you can then visit next attraction such as World Cup Stadium, Oil Tank Culture Park, Haneul Park.

1. How to get there: At AREX Digital Media City Station/ Gongdeok Station, transfer to Subway Line 6  Get off at World Cup Stadium Station, Exit 2, walk 18 mins.
