Ganghwa Island played an important role in national defense to prevent foreign invasions in the crisis moments throughout the history due to its geopolitical location. Ganghwa War Museum was established to provide information to the public to know and learn about the battles that happened at Ganghwa Island. Besides that, it is also a less popular attraction but a great place to enjoy gorgeous golden yellow gingko trees in Autumn. Especially in late October, you will see the yellow gingko trees are showing off its beauty under the sun, making this one of the must-visit places in Autumn.
There is admission fee for Ganghwa War Museum. It costs KRW 900 for adults, and KRW 600 for child, youth and military personnel. They also provide Cultural and Tourist Guide in Korean language and you may refer to the above picture for the time of the tour. For more information about the guide, please ask the staff at ticket office.
At the entrance, you will see a information signboard about 'Sangjeongogeumyemun' (world's first book printed with metal movable types). The world's first metal type book was published at Ganghwa Island and this monument (above pic) was built to inform the public and commemorate the excellence and science of the people in Goryeo Dynasty who developed the world's first metal type. In fact, Ganghwa Island was the place where metal printing technology was revived and developed in the 13th century.
You will also see a monument group at the outdoor. We recommend you to visit this place after 3pm during Autumn as you will find the most beautiful view with the colors of the yellow gingko trees reflecting the sunlight.
Every Autumn, the yellow ginkgo tree creates a beautiful scenery of Autumn. There are a few attractions in Ganghwa Island that offers great view of gingko trees in Autumn, and one of them is the Ganghwa War Museum.
Before visiting the museum, let's take a walk along the gingko trees. If anyone visits this place and saw the yellow gingko trees, he/she would probably get attracted and walk towards this area naturally.

It is a small area only, but when you reach the end of the gingko trees road, you will see a stone stairs. Don't hesitate, just walk up the stairs! You will be able to witness a calm, tranquil scenery of Ganghwa.
Ganghwa War Museum is located at the Gapgot Dondae Outpost which was built along the cost of the Ganghwa Straits at the time of Mongolian invasion. Dondae (outpost) refers to a small observation defense facility made of stone or soil at the coast or border. The current Gapgot Dondae Outpost was restored in 1977 to repair its old form and cannons are displayed in the dondae.
Not too far away, there is a pavilion where you can enjoy the view of Ganghwa. If you walk up the pavilion, you can see the beautiful ginkgo tree path of the Ganghwa War Museum, which is the best place to enjoy the autumn scenery of Ganghwa.
Fruits ripe on the Trifoliate Orange Tree of Gapgot-ri (Natural monument #78). Trifoliate orange tree was planted beneath the walls of fortresses as a symbol of protection against foreign invasion.
The Ganghwa War Museum is located at the north of the boundary line where trifoliate orange tree can grow, so trifoliate orange tree was designated as a natural monument in order to protect it.

Exhibition Hall no.1 - by theme
Exhibition Hall no.2 - Goryeo Dynasty
Exhibition Hall no.3 - Joseon Dynasty
Exhibition Hall no.4 - Modern design under the theme of the war that took place in Ganghwa Island, with exhibition, researches, preservation and collection of the relics related to the war.
It offers various things for you to see, such as showing a scene and explanation of Ganghwa fortress wall being constructed Ganghwa, and exhibiting photos of the national independence army who were active in Ganghwa during that time. You may take photos in the exhibition hall, but it is prohibited to use flash or tripod.
At the entrance of Exhibition Hall no.4, there is a photo zone where you can wear the clothes of army forces during Joseon Dynasty and take photos. In addition, you can also make a postcard with the stamps of the relics displayed in the exhibition hall. We hope you can enjoy this activity when you visit the museum.
