- Gimpo Jangneung Royal Tomb

If you are a forest lover, you should definitely visit Jangneung Royal Tomb in Gmpo. It is a good dating course nearby Seoul area during the weekend. On weekend morning, we started the day earlier than usual and headed for Jangneung Royal Tomb in Gimpo.

There is a historical and cultural center at the entrance of Jangneung Royal Tomb. The entrance to this center is currently suspended to prevent the spread of COVID-19. There is a storage area next to the historical and cultural center where you can store your heavy luggage or bags for free so that you can enjoy your walk at the forest path.

Jangneung Royal Tombs is open from 6 a.m.. There are many local residents who go there for exercise and take a walk in the morning. The atmosphere of the forest varies depending on the direction and angle of light in the morning and afternoon. They said that this forest path is good to visit for a walk anytime, but we encourage you to visit early in the morning. You will see a dreamy forest.

Jangneung is the royal tomb of King Wonjong, the father of the16th king of Joseon, King Injo, and his wife, Queen Inheon. King Wonjong was a son of concubine so he did not ascend to the throne during his lifetime. But he was given a title of "king" when King Injo, son of Queen Inheon, became king through Injo Restoration.

If you go to the Royal Tomb of Joseon Dynasty, you will see the stone-lined road from Hongsalmun gate to Jeongjagak building. The slightly higher path on the left is the incense burner, and the road on the right is the road for the King. On the left path where incense burners are, it is for people to carry incense during ancestral rites, so visitors should use the road on right, which is called "eo-ro".

Jeongjagak is a house built in the shape of a pavilion to place the incense of the tomb. You can see the tomb behind Jeongjagak. Bigak is a place where monuments or memorial stones that record the achievements of the tomb owner are placed. The royal tomb of Joseon is quite similar in terms of structure and sculpture. If you know it, it will be helpful when you visit other tombs.

Jangneung Royal Tomb runs a commentary program to provide deeper understanding on the history of Jangneung Royal Tomb and the royal tomb of Joseon. It is available at 10:30, 13:30, and 15:30 every day, and only people who are vaccinated and have passed 14 days, can join the tour.

Gravestone of Yukkyeongwon

When King Injo's mother, Queen Inheon, died in 1626, this tomb was given the name "Yukgyeongwon" and she was buried in Gimpo. The following year, the tomb of Jeongwon Daewongun (King Wonjong), the father of King Injo, moved to Yukgyeongwon, and the two of them were combined to be called Heunggyeongwon. In 1632, Heunggyeongwon was upgraded to Jangneung and the tombstone used in the past was kept.

After visiting Jangneung, you can take a walk in the forest with alder trees or Mongolian oak trees. You can also return to the Historical and Cultural Center (starting point) after going around the reservoir and ritual house in Jangneung. It takes about 30 minutes round trip from Jangneung to the reservoir and ritual house.

Even though we visited early in the morning, there were many people walking here. If you walk along the forest path, you will see a reservoir. Don't forget to bring water so you can sit on the bench in front of the reservoir and take a rest for a while.

After passing the reservoir, you will come to a ritual house and servant's quarters. The ritual house was the place where King Wonjong and Queen Inheon prepared ancestral rites. It is also the place where personnel that guards and manages the royal tomb stayed and prepare for the ritual.

If you visit in Autumn, the scenery will be spectacular as the maple trees in Jangneung  Royal Tomb turn red.
