< Trying various Korean foods in the-90-year-traditional Korean-style house, ‘Chaungga’ >
There is a variety of foods on Hondae street. Visitors are more likely to have a lot of different dishes from all over the world. For example, from street-foods and snacks to flour based foods, Korean, Chinese and japanese foods, etc. Since the opening of Korail Airport railroad, an increasing number of foreigners have been visiting here with the help of transportation of convenience. Additionally, many Koreans have also been savoring exotic foods. This is why various famous restaurants are springing up in Hongdae area. Chaungga, nestled in a bustling alley is one of them.
Seeing buxom clay potteries and daily-used big iron pots in harmony with each other in an antique Korean-style garden inside a cozy yard, we feel as if we were at our grandma’s house in the country. Also, rafted ceilings, traditional doors and windows with bars, and frame of the house create a beautiful bright atmosphere with soft and subdued lighting. Ornaments such as traditional Korean closets, ceramics, tea cups, and other props give great picturesqueness to the scene.
Chaungga was born by combining three different kinds of restaurants together: ‘Herbs-eating Bear’ which had sold Korean food near here over 10 years, a water ice shop ‘Bing-Bing-Bing’ which helped cool off the heat in the last summer with sweetened ice-flakes, and a snack bar ‘Yellow Noodles’ run by an old lady who was born in 1930 and had last name ‘Cha’. This building is the wonderful outcome of remodeling the-90-year-traditional Korean-style house. It is better that we can enjoy coffee or alcoholic beverages like wine as well as food with the garden pub theme.
The foods also give off strong motherly tastes. Neatly presented pickled garlic, stuffed cucumber pickles, stir-fried fish-cakes, soy sauce braised potatoes and young radish kimchi whet the appetite of people with their original tastes without yerking the tongue.
Chaungga serves ‘Spicy Noodles’ made of chewy noodle stripes mixed with sour, spicy and sweet sauces at 5,500 won and ‘Cold Party-Noodles’ and ‘rich domestic cold bean soup Noodles’-the delicacy of summer season. ‘Cha’s Yellow kalguksu(hand-made chopped noodles)’-it’s original menu- is available only on cloudy days. It also offers ‘Hot Stone Pot Bibimbap’ and ‘Sea Squirt Bibimbap’ other than ‘Herb Bear Bibimbap Soban’-it’s representative menu- at 8,800won. ‘Nooroongji sold at 6,600 won, the parched rice soup which is made of the crust of overcooked rice, is very warm and easily digested. As special menu on rainy days: ’Nokdoojeon-mung bean pancake- and ‘Cockle Sesame Leaf pancake’ working with ‘Makgeolli-Korean traditional rice wine- are popular among customers and are available at 12,000 won. What is better, you can enjoy desserts at the ‘Bing-Bing-Bing’ at a discount if you take the receipt after eating.
If you are low on cash, you can try a bowl of noodles without losing original taste. When you don’t have much appetite, try ‘herb-bibimbap’ enjoying happiness. ‘Steamed chicken’, ‘steamed kimchi’, ‘Eonyang bulgogi stew’ and ‘Japchae’ are also available.

< Bakkunde Tteok-bokki-stir fried rice cake: very well known for its romantic atmosphere and special spicy-taste >
‘Bakkunde Tteok-bokki’, which is located near Hongdae station of Korail Airport railroad, is now becoming famous since that restaurant was introduced in ‘Let’s try to eat’-tvN(Korea’s cable channel)’s food-related drama. In part 4 of that drama, a heroin’s greedily eating performance made viewer’s mouth water.
This Korean snack bar sells instant Tteok-bokki and has the 70’s atmosphere. It opens 24 hours a day and is full of visitors who stay out all night around Hongdae street and feel hungry even at dawn. Customers are available Tteok-bokki at 2,000 won’s discount for 1 person from 6:00 to 11:00.
This bar is decorated with the 70’s mood like the exterior. The telephone pole inside the bar catch visitor’s eyes especially. There are also old textbooks and an old-fashioned black-and-white TV. The large tables in the middle of this bar can accept groups. Going along with the atmosphere, some middle-aged female customers in groups often enjoy Tteok-bokki feeling at ease.
It is very interesting that many famous entertainers often visit here and the written names of people who have ever had seats remain in every seat. For example, the seat on which comedian Park whuisoon sat, the seat where comedian ‘Namolla family’ sat and singer Lee sangeun, ‘One-two’ Song hobeum and etc.
Whoever visit here should call ‘Park-kun-a(Mr. Park)!’ for ordering. The restaurant employees don’t respond to calling any other titles such as ‘Here!’, ‘Hello!’, ‘Brother!‘, and ’Uncle!‘, etc. But on hearing ‘Park-kun-a(Mr. Park)!’, they instantly take their orders and offer service. How interesting!
This bar’s own spicy flavor as well as the atmosphere capture customers’ taste. The most favorite menu is ‘seafood Tteok-bokki mixed with mussel’. The minimum quantity acceptable to order is for 2 persons. Extra order of ramen, glass noodles, jjolmyeon(chewy noodles), gimmari(glass noodles in seaweed), various fried dishes, fish cakes, dumpling and etc. is available at any time. In accordance with the taste, the intensity of hot taste is changeable if it is spoken in advance.
My mouth is watering, seeing Tteok-bokki which is bubbling and boiling on the gas stove. The seafood-brewing soup tastes refreshing and spicy cakes have a spicy sweet taste. Adding some cheese, you can even feel fresh taste. After eating most of Tteok-bokki, you shouldn’t miss fried rice. After calling ‘Park-kun-a(Mr. Park)! Extra order of fried rice!’, a draft of icy cold beer is especially delicious.
