Since They Were Here, We Are Now! Introduction to the War Memorial of Korea

Hello.
June is Veterans Memorial Month in Korea!
Today I will introduce the War Memorial of Korea, where we can learn the importance of peace through the horrors of war.

The War Memorial of Korea is filled with the history of war and is a place that allows us to prevent future wars through the lessons learned by past wars,
the collection and preservation of wartime artifacts, and the history of struggle against external forces that protected the lives and properties of Korea’s citizens.

Spirit of the Patriots
Country Defense Commemorative Room

Experiencing historically numerous wars and being able to create todays Korea is thanks to the patriots who sacrificed their lives for their homeland.

In the commemorative room of the troops, you can cherish the memoires and
admire the great achievements of Koreas troops who have fallen in wars and combat to this date.

6·25 The Sad History and Horrors of War
6·25 War Room

In the 6·25 War Room, you can feel the battlefield more vividly by experiencing Korean history which suffers the pain of division and
the process of seeking refuge during the Battle of Incheon in the 4D Experience Room.

63 Countries’ Support and Sacrifice
U.N. Room

The U.N. sent troops to Korea to block North Korean aggression and fight for freedom and peace.
At the U.N. Room, you can see the actions and history of the U.N. that helped the Republic of Korea.

Further, you can learn about the supportive actions that the U.N. took after 6·25 to assist Korea in recovering from the damages of war in addition to the help the U.N. provided that
lead to the economic development that transformed Korea, also known as Korea’s slogan, “the Miracle on the Han River”.

War Weapons of the Land and Sea
Outdoor Exhibition

The large exhibition located outside of the War Memorial of Korea showcases equipment used at the time of the 6·25 War in addition
to displaying approximately 70 weapons from countries around the world which were used after World War 2.

[AREX connection] 2019 Gogung Night Time Opening and Arrangement

Hello! This is AREX.
In no time the start of summer has arrived.

Here you can escape the scorching hot sun and enjoy the night time festivities.

I will introduce you to the night time openings of Seoul’s 5 palaces.

1. Gyeongbokgung Palace

The first palace I will introduce is not only famous in Korea, but around the world: Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Since it was announced it will be opening during the Chuseok Holiday (September 12 – 15)
those who would like that have a special holiday experience should stop by the palace.

Tip. If you go to Gyeongbokgun Palace, you can’t miss the hanbok experience!
Take a photo while wearing Korea’s beautiful traditional clothing: the hanbok!

- Date: 07.21~08.03 / 09.12~09.15(Chuseok Holiday) / 09.22~10.05 / 10.20~10.31
- Time: June~August 19:30~22:00 / September~October 19:00~21:30

2. Deoksugung Palace

The third palace I will introduce is a place with beautiful scenery that has taken hold
between the “forest” of buildings in Seoul: Deoksugung Palace.

Compared to the other palaces, the admission fee is inexpensive
so I want to call it a place where you can have a comfortable tour!

Tip. Feeling the Beauty of “Olden Things” Downtown
Deoksugung Palace is famous not just for its beauty but also its stonewall walkway.
I hope you walk down the stonewall walkway at night with a lover or family.

- Date: All Day (Closed on Monday)
- Time: 09:00~21:00

3. Changgyeonggung Palace

The fourth place I will introduce is Changgyeonggng Palace.
Justlike Deoksugung Palace, Changgyeoggung Palace has been open to night time viewing since 2019.

At its entrance, Korea’s traditional lanterns are shared freely so you can imagine what
it was like to be a person from that era.

Tip. Delicate lights along the path.
Beyond the ancient palace of Myeongjeongmun are long delicate lights that line your path
creating an attraction that allows you to feel the palace’s dignity and majesty.

- Date: All Day (Closed on Monday)
- Time: 09:00~21:00

4. Gyeonghuigung Palace (It's not open at night.)

At last, I will introduce our fifth ancient palace. Due to the destruction caused by the
Japanese colonial era, only one part of the painful past remains of Gyeonghuigung Palace.

Now in the heart of downtown the area remains as a to relax comfortably and a learning center for its citizens.

Tip. Seoul Museum of History just opposite of Gyeonghuigung Palace.
After having a nice browse of Gyeonghuigung Palace,
I suggest stopping by the Seoul Museum of History across the street.

- Date: It's not open at night.
- Time: 09:00~18:00

Now we’ve learned a lot about the ancient palaces that are open to night time viewings in 2019!

Instead of under the scorching sun, come feel the charm of the palaces at night!

Gongdeok Station_Hyochang Park

Hello, this is AREX! :)

Do you know Hyochang Park, the city park located in Yongsan’s Hyochang neighborhood?

Hyochang Park is different from your normal park in that it has facilities related to veterans and other historical sites.
You can really see the historical atmosphere here. It’s a great place to take a walk and be charged with patriotism.

So, shall we go more in depth about Hyochang Park?

1. History of Hyochang Park

With an area of 123,307, Hyochang Park is home to the grave of the 22nd King of Joseon’s eldest son, Mun Hyo, thus giving the park its name.
Hyochang Park was designated Korean historical site number 330 on June 8th, 1989.

2. Hyochang Park: A Resting Place for Citizens

The park does a great job of acting as a place of rest for its residents.
While families, couples, and animal companions alike take walks together,
another side of the park is crowded but full of energy thanks to the elders chatting while playing Janggi together.

3. Hyochang Park: Creating the Will of Our Independence Fighters

At the park, there is not only the resting site of Baekbeom’s Kim Koo,
but also that of others who sacrificed their lives for independence such as Lee Bong-Chang,
Yun Bong-Gil, Baek Jegong-gi and other main figures of the provisional government.

This park’s cemetery is for those who dedicated their lives for the country.

4. The Various Roles of Hyochang Park

With a children’s park, resting area, walking trails, a bronze statue of Saint Wonhyo, etc.,
Hyochang Park is full of various elements making it much more than just a typical park.

On the lower side of the park is Hyochang Stadium, which has an area of 27,593
It opened in October of 1960 and is used not only to host soccer, track and field, tennis,
and other various sporting events, but also is open for locals to hold their own rallies.

5. How to get to Hyochang Park

From Seoul Station(“0”) take just one (“1”) stop on the AREX line to Gongdeok Station.
After getting off the train, go out exit “6” and walk towards the park. In just “5” minutes you will arrive.

Enjoy walks downtown at Hyochang Park!

Since it’s not far from Seoul Station, I suggest stopping by.
